I built Interestin because finding new like minded people online should be much more easy and private
Say you’d like to find other people who love, I don’t know, programming and playing tennis on their free time. For this to happen, you need to browse the web continuously till you find a nice forum with some nice people. Then you’d enter your name, email, password, username, and what not, and in case you liked it, you’d stay. You have to do this for each of your interests, over and over again. As far as I see it, it takes too much time, it’s just too complex. Then, you’d go to your favourite social network, try to do that same thing. And then… finally… you think you’ve found your guy (or girl). You review his profile, most of it is probably public, you think this guy/girl is cool. You send him/her a message. But he gets freaked out. He just got a message from a complete stranger that somehow knows everything about him. Too weird, no privacy whatsoever. You’re tired of it, you skip your goal and get back to work. Again.
My goal with interestin is to provide us with a better platform for meeting new people who share our passions and hobbies (FYI, it’s not a dating site), and keep our data as visible as we want it to be. No more long hard-to-understand changing privacy policies. Policies that make us agree to get sold to 3rd parties.
So what can you do that others can’t?
Interestin lets you choose your hobbies and interests. Each interest has its own page, where you can post statuses to your interest’s friends, upload collections of links, pictures and videos, post to a public board the things you’d like to do, search for people, and create events. You can also stay in touch with your general previously known friends, doing the same things. For your comfort, everything comes into one central nice looking main activity feed. Currently, every section of one’s profile is restricted to friends only (besides profile picture). Later on, a simple dashboard of privacy settings will be added, where you’ll be able to control every piece of your data. Please keep in mind that’s this is just a minimum viable product.
When will you launch it?
In a couple of weeks. I’m currently rebuilding the activity feed and adding memcached for faster website performances. Then I’ll release it as a private beta to each one of you who will/already asked for an invite, so I can use your awesome feedback to improve it before launching it to public.
Just to be clear, as I commented on HN: ”The goal here isn’t to connect you with people who love both x and y, and so they fit you as potential best friend. The goal here is replace those tons of friends on our social networks, whom half we barely know, with people who really interest us and love x, or y, or even both. I’ve seen too many of those location based apps on my iPhone, claiming to find me some new ‘BFF’s’. It isn’t the goal.”
I’d love to hear your thoughts!
